Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Carlsbad Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning

We provide independent HeatShield repair in Carlsbad, including chimney cleaning and Cerfractory restoration throughout the area, from La Costa to the Village. HeatShield is a ceramic flue resurfacing system, and we use the genuine HeatShield Cerfractory materials when a flue or firebox needs more than a sweep. What sets our HeatShield work apart in Carlsbad is that we pair the coating with a full Level 2 camera inspection first, so we’re restoring the flue based on what we actually see inside it, not a guess from the rooftop.

Brent Calloway grew up in Olde Carlsbad and has spent more than two decades servicing coastal San Diego County chimneys, so he knows what the marine layer and salt air do to fireplaces here. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, not a dealer or authorized installer, offering HeatShield in Oceanside and nearby coastal communities as well. That matters because our recommendation to reline, repoint, or simply sweep is based on what your flue and firebox actually need after we clean and inspect them. Why Trust Supreme Chimney Sweep for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?

HeatShield is not a coating you trowel onto a dirty flue and walk away from. The difference between a reline that lasts 20 years and one that flakes off in three comes down to prep, cure time, and knowing what the underlying flue actually looks like. We’ve been through enough HeatShield applications on Carlsbad’s 1980s and 1990s tract-home fireplaces to know that the coating only performs when the flue is swept clean, dry, and structurally sound underneath it.

Brent’s background through MiraCosta College’s vocational program and years of hands-on chimney work across coastal North County, including HeatShield in Vista and surrounding areas, means we don’t treat HeatShield as a product to sell. We treat it as a repair method to apply when it’s the right call. If the firebox brick is sound and only the mortar joints have failed, we’ll say so and repoint instead. If the flue is cracked through and a full stainless reline would be overkill, HeatShield coating is often the more sensible path, and we’ll tell you that plainly. Professional-grade parts, properly installed.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Carlsbad

HeatShield is a proven system when applied correctly, but we regularly see specific failures in Carlsbad homes, particularly in the coastal zone where fireplaces sit dormant for years. These are the issues we encounter most often and how we address them:

  • Cerfractory delamination on flue walls. We regularly see the HeatShield coating flaking or peeling in Carlsbad fireplaces that were relined years ago, often because the original cure was rushed or the chimney got too hot before the coating fully set. The fix is a full sweep to remove loose material, a camera inspection to check the underlying flue, and a proper reapplication with the correct cure schedule.
  • Coating applied over a wet or sooted flue. On more than one occasion we’ve found HeatShield material that never bonded because it went onto a flue that hadn’t been fully cleaned and dried. The coating stays soft and breaks down under a brush. We always start with a complete sweep and drying period before any Cerfractory goes on.
  • Cracked refractory firebrick sealed but not repointed. In La Costa and Calavera Hills homes with original masonry fireboxes, we often find cracks that were coated over but never repointed. The crack reopens behind the coating within a season or two. We repoint failed mortar joints and replace cracked firebrick before applying HeatShield, so the repair actually holds.
  • Relined flues failing from water intrusion at the crown. A HeatShield reline that was done without fixing a missing or short rain cap won’t last. Water seeps in at the crown and eats the new lining from the top down. In Carlsbad’s salt-heavy air, corroded caps are common. We check the cap and crown before we ever touch a flue with Cerfractory.
  • Smoke drafting caused by firebox cracks, not just a dirty flue. We’ve had Carlsbad homeowners call us sure they needed a sweep, when a camera inspection showed a hairline crack through the firebox back wall was pulling smoke into the living room. Sweeping alone wouldn’t fix it. HeatShield coating applied to the cracked firebox and flue section restored the draw.

HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

HeatShield’s Cerfractory flue sealant has no honest aftermarket substitute. The coating is a specific ceramic refractory material, and using a generic refractory or masonry sealer to save money is a shortcut we won’t take. When a flue or firebox needs relining, we use genuine HeatShield Cerfractory materials, period. For firebox rebuilds, we match refractory mortar and firebrick by specification, which keeps the repair durable without paying a brand premium on commodity masonry products.

Our stance is repair-first when it makes sense. If we inspect a firebox and find sound brick with failed joints, repointing is usually the right call and it costs less than a full reline. If the flue is cracked through and leaking smoke into the house or the chase, HeatShield repair in Encinitas and throughout our service area offers a cheaper, far less invasive option than a full stainless reline, and we’ll say so. We don’t upsell relines, and we don’t talk homeowners out of necessary repair work. We show you the camera footage and walk you through what we saw, so the decision is yours with real evidence in hand. Call (833) 589-8164 if you’d like us to take a look.

Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Camera inspection first. We run a Level 2 camera through the flue and firebox before recommending any HeatShield work. You see the footage with us. If the flue is sound and only needs a sweep, that’s what we’ll say.
  2. 2
Sweep and prep the surfaces. HeatShield only bonds to clean, dry masonry. We sweep the flue completely, clear any debris or nesting material, and allow the surfaces to dry before touching them with Cerfractory.
  3. 3
Repoint and repair the structural base. If the firebox has cracked brick or failed joints, we repoint and replace firebrick first. Coating over unrepaired cracks is how relines fail in Carlsbad, and we won’t do it.
  4. 4
Apply HeatShield Cerfractory. We use genuine HeatShield materials, applied with the correct cure time for the temperature and humidity conditions. Carlsbad’s marine layer means we account for slower cure in damp weather rather than rushing the job.
  5. 5
Test and verify. We run a smoke test before we leave and confirm the draw is clean. If we reset a damper or replaced a cap as part of the work, we verify those as well.

We work with HeatShield’s full restoration system across Carlsbad, covering the Cerfractory flue sealant used to restore cracked masonry flues, HeatShield refractory mortar for firebox and firebrick joint repair, and HeatShield air-cooled fireplace relining for 1980s through 2000s tract-home fireboxes. We also reline wood-burning fireplace inserts and freestanding stove flues where HeatShield liners are specified. We keep genuine Cerfractory materials on hand for common Carlsbad applications, which means most HeatShield repairs can be scheduled without a long parts wait.

We Also Service These Brands

HeatShield is one tool in a broader kit. We also install DuraFlex flexible liner systems where a full stainless reline is called for, and we use Gelco components for caps, dampers, and chase covers.
